Wisdom tooth

Wisdom tooth

We have prepared an article about wisdom teeth, which sooner or later will excite any person. In this article you'll learn:
  • why it named wisdom tooth,

  • when start to grow wisdom teeth

  • how long growing wisdom tooth

  • see how the wisdom tooth looks like in photographs and radiographs.

Wisdom tooth - normal tooth that has the same structure as other multi-root teeth. Wisdom teeth also known as "eight teeth" because if you count the number of teeth in each half of the lower and upper jaw, since the central incisor, each wisdom tooth in a row is just the eighth tooth.

How much wisdom teeth in humans? - Only four. Exceptions are cases when there is, for example, eight dying tooth germs. In this case, the number of wisdom teeth in humans will naturally lower. See the Figure 1.

Structure of wisdom tooth

People often ask: how many roots in the wisdom tooth? Number roots may be different. You can often find wisdom tooth roots with four and sometimes even five. On the other hand there are one-eighth root teeth - this is due to the effect of "fused together
roots" that visually look like a massive tooth root.

Why wisdom tooth is different from other teeth:

  • firstly - the wisdom teeth usually have strongly curved roots.

  • and secondly - in connection with curved roots root canals in eight teeth very difficult to treat because they are quite distorted and thus exposed to difficult machining and sealing.

Otherwise, the wisdom tooth has the same structure as the other teeth. Figure 2 you can see sawn in half wisdom tooth.

Eruption of wisdom teeth

Most of the permanent teeth erupt ranging from 7 years to 13 years. The only exception is the wisdom tooth. It begins its eruption usually not before 18-21 years, but in principle eruption can be at 40 years (depending on several factors). Due to the fact that this tooth cuts through already in middle age for a man - and named his wisdom teeth.

On radiographs (Figure 3) you can see the wisdom tooth during eruption of a young man of 20 years. The tooth has already fully formed crown, but the tooth roots are still in the process of x-rays and visible - as they still underdeveloped.

So:

  • eighth tooth crown completes its formation about 12 years,

  • eruption of wisdom teeth usually begins no earlier than 18-21 years,

  • the end of a root is not before 24 years.

On radiographs (Figure 4) You can see the wisdom teeth of the upper and lower jaw. In the X-ray shows that the eighth roots of the teeth are fully formed - so we can just say that it is a picture of an adult. The lower wisdom tooth takes a horizontal position, eliminating the possibility of eruption. For snapshot shows that the lower wisdom tooth lacks space for the eruption - because of insufficient length of the mandible.

Figure 5 you can see the lower wisdom tooth in a state of eruption. The tooth is at the stage of eruption, when the chewing surface of the tooth crown is covered with a mucous membrane only, one of the hills crown already looks out from under the mucosa.

How long is cut wisdom tooth

Time eruption of wisdom teeth will depend on how he set aside enough space in the jaw for eruption. If the space is small, the wisdom tooth starts to move slowly seventh teeth, and they in turn other teeth to release a place. This, incidentally, may lead to crowding of the teeth.

Therefore, it is often recommended dentists remove teeth even healthy eighth (fully or partially slotted) to prevent bias and the appearance of teeth crowding in the anterior dentition. That is, the less room for eruption, the longer it will erupt wisdom tooth.

I must say that such problems with eruption of teeth in eighths of people were not always. Previously, people had a greater length of the mandible, which permits no problems erupt all teeth. Changing the length of the jaws in modern humans due to changes in diet. Previously, people eat more coarse food, not so crushed, digested, etc.

Stronger food led to what was necessary to load large jaws and teeth to chew this food. Loading contributed to maintaining the size of the jaws. However, when people began to eat mostly soft, food-processed food - load on the jaw became much smaller, and the size of the jaws from generation to generation decreased. As a result, often for eight teeth of modern humans simply no room via a short length of the jaw and eighth teeth because usually have complicated eruption or not erupt at all.
